Bethnal Green,E2 9NF ,London
Located right in the heart of the trendy and happening East End, Town Hall Hotel proves that Hip and Heritage can be a marriage made in heaven. The majestic Edwardian building served as, you guessed it, Bethnal Green's town hall for over 80 years. A 1930s extension added the magnificent Art Deco interiors which have made the building so attractive as a film location (think Atonement, Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and TV’s Poirot among many others). Following a meticulous renovation which won accolades from architectural preservationists far and wide, sleek and stylish Town Hall looks better than ever. All the quirky character has been retained, as have fascinating period details such as green and white marble floors and the council chamber with Australian walnut panelling. The bedrooms are spacious and filled with natural light. There are a handful of Doubles, but the huge majority of rooms are studios and suites fully equipped with kitchens, so that you have the feeling of apartment living just like a Londoner. The décor is elegantly minimalist with chic vintage mid-century furniture, sumptuous free standing baths, luxury toiletries, flatscreen TVs, CD/DVD players (ask about the library of films shot on location here), free Wi-Fi and top level coffee making facilities. In the Typing Room Restaurant, Chef Lee Wescott (formerly of Claridge's, Noma and Per Se) sources seasonal British ingredients to create highly creative European dishes. For dinner, choose between the 5 and 7 course tasting menus, and allow Lee take you on an extraordinary culinary journey. For lighter bites and casual dining, you can’t do better than the Corner Room Restaurant on the first floor. The philosophy here is bringing out simple flavours with sophisticated cooking techniques – not to mention exceptional food at very reasonable prices. For those who wish to hunker down in their spacious apartment, 24 hour room service is also available. You would also do well to call in for a cocktail at the Peg + Patriot, one of the coolest bars in a very cool neighbourhood (open till midnight, 1am at weekends). To help you relax after a long day of work or sightseeing, there’s a small gym downstairs, plus a lovely brass and marble swimming pool flooded with natural light through the roof. Far from being out of the way, Town Hall is very much at the creative centre of 21st century London. With Hoxton, Hackney, Dalston and Shoreditch all nearby, the variety of restaurants and bars within stumbling distance of the front door is astonishing. For a spot of leafy relaxation, lovely Victoria Park is a also nearby. Bethnal Green underground is a short stroll away and the speedy Central line whisks you to Oxford Circus in around 15 minutes. There’s also a free shuttle service available to take guests to Liverpool Street and Bank stations on weekday mornings.
