The Raven in the lovely Shropshire market town of Much Wenlock is our idea of a perfect 18th century coaching inn. All the period warmth you would expect is here, alongside a high degree of modern sophistication and exquisite attention to detail. The place has immense character: the flower-filled courtyard gives access to bedrooms which are all individually furnished. For a special occasion, ask for the four-poster bed with an imaginatively designed galleried suite and lounge. For a more contemporary feel, book one of their newly decorated and wonderful 'Forge' rooms. All rooms come equipped with power showers, satellite TV and tea and coffee makers and internet connection. Before you dine, have a look at the Olympian memorabilia on display in the public rooms (Much Wenlock can lay claim to the birthplace of the modern Olympic Games) - and then prepare yourself for a treat. The food here is imaginative and delicious and sourced from the very best award-winning producers. A pint of local draught ale at the bar is also much recommended. The Raven is perfect for exploring the best of Shropshire. Much Wenlock itself is utterly charming and well worth a meander, and the fascinating museums at Ironbridge Gorge, only ten minutes away, are a must. Great walking is to be found nearby at Wenlock Edge and within a half hour’s drive you will find other superb walking trails such as Carding Mill Valley, Long Mynd and Offa’s Dyke. Also nearby and worth exploring are the incredible Hawkstone Park and Follies, medieval Stokesay Castle, the NT properties of Wilderhope Manor, Attingham Park and Benthall Hall, not to mention the historic and culinary delights of market towns such as Bridgenorth and Ludlow.
