Tucked away in lovely Devon countryside between the wild expanses of Dartmoor and Bodmin Moor, Percy’s Country Hotel is a welcoming boutique hotel and excellent organic restaurant. Run by celebrated chef and cookbook author Tina Bricknell-Webb and her husband Tony, Percy’s is the perfect place to recharge the batteries with relaxed, informal dining and food with integrity, including organic and pasture-fed ingredients. Tina and Tony are perfect hosts and immediately make you feel right at home. The spacious and luminous bedrooms are located in the converted barn. Each room is supremely comfortable with thoughtful comforts to make your stay special, including king size beds, Egyptian cotton linen, free Wi-Fi, a fridge and bathrobes. Tina’s cooking is truly special. Many of the ingredients on your menu come from the 50 acre estate, and Tina rears her own pork and lamb. With so many of us confined to urban areas, we forget what it means to have truly fresh food, and the owner’s daily connection with the land shines through in the exceptional cooking. Special diets are catered for, including gluten free, dairy free, lactose free and special cancer diets. Everyone eats at the same time and the atmosphere is convivial and relaxed. Tony is on hand to help recommend a wine from his superb list. One of the treats of staying at Percy’s is to stroll around the grounds, watching the animals and living close to nature. The farm is alive with horses, sheep, pigs and dogs and a walk into the woods brings opportunities to spot squirrels, rabbits, badgers and deer, plus the extraordinary dams made by those fine engineers, the resident beavers. Percy’s is also a great spot for birdwatching. Wellies are available for borrowing and there’s often a dog on hand willing to take you for a walk. For those willing to venture further afield, the glories of walking Bodmin, Dartmoor and Cornwall’s glorious coastal path are within striking distance, as are the architectural beauties of Cotehele and Saltram House.
